SEDATION

Who can benefit from sedation?

People of all ages can benefit from sedation dentistry, including children. We often recommend this option for those with:

  • Dental anxiety.
  • A fear of visiting the dentist.
  • An overly sensitive gag reflex.
  • A fear of needles (aichmophobia)
  • Extreme teeth sensitivity
  • Feelings of claustrophobia while in the dental chair.
  • Decreased sensitivity to local anesthesia.
  • Difficulty controlling movements.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Laughing gas, also called nitrous oxide sedation, is a safe and effective way to help you relax and feel less anxious during dental treatments. It involves wearing a small mask over your nose, allowing you to breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This creates a calming and enjoyable sensation while keeping you awake and able to talk to your dentist. If you are nervous about your treatment, nitrous oxide may be that little nudge that loosens you off from that stress. Laughing gas starts working quickly and wears off fast, making it a convenient choice for managing dental anxiety and ensuring a comfortable dental visit. Typically, no food or water is recommended for 2 hours before the sedation appointment.

Oral Sedation

This type of sedation involves taking the sedative in a pill form through oral ingestion method. With oral conscious sedation, we give you sedative medication (usually in pill form) about an hour before your procedure begins. Most dentists use triazolam (Halcion®), but other medications may be used too, including zaleplon and lorazepam. For children, liquid sedation in pediatric dentistry, such as midazolam oral syrup can be used.

Oral sedation makes you quite groggy, and you may even fall asleep. However, you will still be able to communicate with if necessary, and you’ll awaken with a gentle nudge if you fall asleep. Because oral sedation temporarily affects your memory and motor skills, It is mandatory that a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.

IV sedation

IV sedation is usually the deepest form of sedation that we can provide while you are conscious. The sedative medication will be delivered through the bloodstream through an IV(intravenous) line. During the sedation, the dentist will be monitoring the oxygen level, heart rate, and blood pressure at all times. Most people who receive this kind of sedation will have little to no memory of their treatment when they wake up and would likely feel as if they are falling asleep. This option is usually best for people with severe dental anxiety and undergoing lengthy procedures.
