CDCP Dentist in Barrie
We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan and bill the plan directly, so you can use your coverage close to home on Yonge Street.

Yes. Yonge Forest Dental accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the federal dental program for Canadian residents without dental insurance. We bill the plan directly, so you only pay any portion the plan does not cover. Our dentists, Dr. Doowon Joo and Dr. Jessica Chau, are general dentists registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.
If cost has kept you away from the dentist for a while, you are welcome here. We will look at where things stand, explain what CDCP covers for you, and go at a pace that feels right.
Who qualifies for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
You qualify for CDCP if you meet all four federal rules. Your adjusted family net income must be under $90,000. You cannot have access to any private dental insurance. You and your spouse or partner must have filed your Canadian tax returns, and you must be Canadian residents for tax purposes. The Government of Canada decides eligibility, not the dental office.
Here are the four rules in plain terms:
- Income: your adjusted family net income is under $90,000.
- No dental insurance: you have no access to a workplace, pension, student, professional or family dental plan, even one you do not use.
- Taxes filed: you, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, filed a tax return for the previous year.
- Residency: you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
If your T4 or T4A slip shows an employer offered you dental coverage, you likely have access to insurance and will not qualify. You can check the details and apply on the Government of Canada's CDCP pages.
How much does CDCP cover?
CDCP pays a share of each covered service based on your adjusted family net income. Under $70,000, the plan pays 100 percent of its set fee. From $70,000 to $79,999, it pays 60 percent and you pay 40 percent. From $80,000 to $89,999, it pays 40 percent and you pay 60 percent. CDCP fees can differ from a clinic's fees.
| Adjusted family net income | CDCP pays | You pay (co-payment) |
|---|---|---|
| Under $70,000 | 100% of the CDCP fee | 0% of the CDCP fee |
| $70,000 to $79,999 | 60% of the CDCP fee | 40% of the CDCP fee |
| $80,000 to $89,999 | 40% of the CDCP fee | 60% of the CDCP fee |
The government sets its own fee for each service. Our clinic follows the Ontario dental fee guide. If our fee is higher than the fee the government sets for a service, you may owe the difference between the two. You may also pay for any service CDCP does not cover. Before we start any treatment, our team goes over what the plan pays and what, if anything, you would pay yourself.
What dental care does CDCP cover?
CDCP covers most everyday dental care. That includes checkups, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns, dentures and tooth extractions. Some services need approval from the plan first, called preauthorization. Orthodontic treatment, such as braces or clear aligners, is not currently covered by CDCP.
CDCP also sets frequency limits, which cap how often the plan pays for certain services in a set period. Care beyond those limits needs preauthorization. Because the rules differ from one service to the next, we check your plan details before booking anything beyond a routine checkup and cleaning. That way you know your share before the visit, not after it.
Preventive care
Exams, X-rays, cleanings (scaling), fluoride and sealants. These are the visits that catch small problems early.
Basic treatment
Fillings, root canal treatment and non-surgical gum disease care. Most basic services do not need preauthorization.
Major treatment
Crowns, posts, complete and partial dentures, denture repairs and oral surgery such as tooth extractions.
Which treatments need preauthorization?
Some CDCP services need the plan's approval before treatment, a step called preauthorization. Crowns, posts, partial dentures, some complete dentures and root canal re-treatment are on the list. So are sedation and any service past the plan's frequency limits. The plan can say no, so we wait for its answer before we book that treatment.
If your care plan includes one of these services, we send the preauthorization request to the plan for you. Once the plan answers, we go over the result with you and book your visit. Checkups, cleanings and most fillings go ahead without this step.
How to use your CDCP coverage at Yonge Forest Dental
Using CDCP with us takes four steps. First, get your acceptance from the Government of Canada. Second, book a visit and tell us you have CDCP. Third, see the dentist and hear your treatment options, with costs explained up front. Fourth, we bill the plan directly after your visit, so you only pay your share.
Get accepted into the plan
Apply through Service Canada online or by phone at 1-833-537-4342. Wait for your acceptance before you book treatment.
Book and mention CDCP
Call 249-888-2001 or book online, and say you have CDCP. Bring your member details to the visit.
Hear your options and costs
Your dentist explains what they find and what CDCP covers. You decide on treatment after you know your share.
We bill the plan for you
We send the claim to CDCP directly. You pay only your co-payment and any amount the plan does not cover.
What to bring to a CDCP appointment
Bring three things to your first CDCP visit at Yonge Forest Dental: your CDCP member details, a list of the medications you take, and the name of your last dentist. Your member details let us check your coverage and bill the plan. The medication list keeps your treatment safe. Your last dentist's name lets us request past X-rays so you may not need new ones.
Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early on your first visit. Please complete our online new patient forms before your visit; our team will confirm your CDCP information when you arrive. If a family member is coming too, bring their details as well. You do not need a referral from a doctor to book.
Do I need to renew CDCP every year?
Yes. You must confirm your CDCP eligibility every year to keep your coverage. Each benefit year runs from July 1 to June 30. The 2026 renewal window closed in June 2026. If you missed it, you can send a new application for the 2026 to 2027 benefit year. Care you receive during a gap in coverage is not covered or paid back later.
Check that your coverage is active before each appointment, especially in early summer. If you are not sure, your Service Canada account shows your status. You can also call our front desk and we will help you work out what to check.

Questions about CDCP
Does CDCP cover wisdom tooth removal?
CDCP covers oral surgery such as tooth extractions as a major service. Coverage for a specific wisdom tooth depends on your assessment and the plan's rules, and some surgical care may need preauthorization. We look at your X-rays first and explain what CDCP would pay before we book the extraction.
Does CDCP cover braces or Invisalign?
No. Orthodontic services, including braces and clear aligners such as Invisalign, are not currently covered by CDCP. If you are interested in straightening your teeth, we can still talk through your options and costs. You would pay for that treatment yourself or through other coverage.
Can I use CDCP if I have dental insurance through work?
No. You cannot qualify for CDCP if you have access to private dental insurance, even if you choose not to use it. That includes coverage through a spouse or a parent. If you have a workplace plan, we direct bill most private insurers instead.
